Tibet is just 3 passes away

. . . it seems. "Unta dhura (the ridge shaped like a camel back), Jandi Dhura and Kingribingi dhura( because of the convoluted way), you are in Tibet.

But for Malari, one has to cross Unta dhura and camp at Topi dunga and then go across Khinger pass to Lapthal and then onto the road head at Sumna and finally Malari.

It seems there are two routes from Topidunga to Malari. One is the above route and the second one seems to be along Girthi river by-passing the the disputed territory of Lapthal and Barahoti which constitute the middle sector in India-China contention over actual border. Google earth which shows the line of actual control does n't show Lapthal to be in Indian territory.Very few trekking parties who went to that area also visited Lapthal as per the trek reports.

Someday I think I should be able make it as the tentions ease between the two countries."

. . . essential i figure . . . i just had this picture of say a perspective vortex where i could see myself in my exact location with the winter coming down on me and the road endless . . . i want to give walking a try, a bit disillusioned with roads and international borders, specially where third world passports are concerned (read pet complaint) . . . walk to padum, it has to be the most tempting yet achievabl target one could set for oneself . . . would also be the ultimate change of scene, biking isn;t a patch on walking with detox and paradigm shift as the scale of measure . . . though i am tempted to check out the two (or perhaps three) immediate visa offices in question . . . any ideas . . ?

a month back, and suddenly i see everybody heading off to the himalayas! clutch split down the middle between ladakh and spiti! and some hardcore glacial trekking in gharwal! souinds like we have an eventful summer ahead!

lets hope i can get josh and his new bike out somewhere for a bit . . ! feeling kinda left out already (-;

seems to be the time to split from this heat.....so les try m figr out the 'ladakh' scene we have been talking of. les do as soon as rohtang permits us.....1st week of June from what HPTDC says.....so les say about 7-8-9 june sorta thing. del-manali-rohtang-tso mo riri-leh-nubra-leh-kargil-dras-srinagar-jammu-delhi. more or less.

parikrama over, back to erode! its been quite a hardcore two weeks, tamil nadu and kerela make one hell of a pair! erode, kodi(yes we scored mushrooms, but dry mushrooms are fuck all you have to come in september!)then adi left for his daddy! and the pace quickened for a toddy guzzling enraged driving bout with swastik.

madurai, rameshwaram, dhanush kodi, eruvadi, tuticorin, tirunelveli, nagercoil, trivandrum, enter kerela! varkala beach . . . jew town cochin . . . pannor beach, tellicherry, waynad, ooty, erode. . . awesome circle. the roads were also great leave a few!

now i plan to drive up the centre, lets see how fast i can manage it! its about 2500 . . . my average has dropped to just 200 km/day since i met adi! cheers!

we're upto 3! almost managedfour but the big gada andhisoldbike couldn'tpartfrom bangalore.so now tik adi and i go further down! we've reached erode . . . adi's mansion full with blasting music, net servants dogs and aircon! the mushrooms are calling!

the drive down the centre of the country was really something else! the plateau is quite spectacular! never expected such expanse . . . and then some! not to mention ajanta ellora daulatabad bijapur hampi where we decided notto bunk the entire coast and head out to gokarna . . . truely one of the virginestbeaches i have seen! golden sand transparent waves and lush green mountains crumbling stonily into the surf . . . beats the pants off goa!

nh17 hasclimbed up to the top of my favouritehighways! udipi manipal managalore bangalore erode . . . the drive from banagalore to tamilnad is also something else! you can sensethe peninsula petering out bouldering southward! the last leg promises to elevate!

hey! with trepidation i tread on a blog worn with posting! whats up with the biketr bunch? vasant kunj gatherings . . . at moni's place in meera road, bombay. quite a contrast from cuffe parade last night! feels quite cool to have reached the fast city, and now that adis with me . . .we take on the peninsula . . !

its been quite a crazy last two weeks, delhi, tonk, bundi, bhilwara, mount abu, bhuj, narain sarovar, lakhpat, kaladungar(khavda), junagadh, bagodra, baroda, daman, mumbai and tonight meera road!

from hewre we go north east towards ajanta ellora and daulatabad . . . adi's bike is quite cool standard a350 god knows what that means but it rides cool. found a good mechanic in andheri set up adis bike all right, he trained it up, so broke the indicators, and break lever and stuff, also his point was worn and gearbox dry! but we seem all set to roll . . . there is so much to say, its dificult to sift thru the experiences!

adi just walked in with a couple of cold beers so things are looking up!

i've penned down a list of things that would go into a bike bag . . . chex . . . add . .

clothes (undies, sox, t shirts, pans, shorts, towel, jacket, floaters, gloves, muffler)
camera, film, batteries, film
walkman/mp3 player, goggles (day and night)
swiss army knife
chocolate, chikki, biscuts, preserves, coffe mix, soups mix . . .
books, notebook, sketh book
maps
pen, pencil, cutter, blades

the idea is to have the large gear strapped directly to the bike and two bags which go on each side of the bike holding the rest of the stuff! i had thought that both the bags should combine to make one rucksack, but asim says that when you are leaving your bike, it makes sense to leave like half your stuff anyway, so maybe it makes more sense to just have one of the two as a ruck sack . . . who ever had a puncture while walking . . ?

i'm working on some drawings which i shall scan and upload . . .

i'd almost forgotten what it was like, but these bring some back! definately one of the best rides in the country along the satluj and spiti! snow stopped us from getting our bikes to kaza, but we left them behing! quite a blast. -20 c is good fun! we were also the only tourists in spiti at the time!

A good off the road biking option is Sambhar lake.Turn left at Dudu, when going from Ajmer to Jaipur. It's a nice distraction from the so called super highway.Dont be amazed if u dont find any water ..its supposed to be like that ..its salt mining !!dummies!!!The lake makes for nice speculation talk also....just as the wind mills in Jaisalmer...well thats another story for another time.....thump on

people....quick....head for rajasthan....the weather is amazing.....the roads are amazier...and the sights and sounds are amazest of all....quite a sojourn from delhi. oh. and. the food. well. decent as long as u instruct em thru it all. be sure to ask em to put very lil mirchi...and don't forget to bargain...yes...on food....paranthas in particular.

And last and lasting.....there are bhang shops galore....in every city.....boom boom boom.

p.s. while in jodhpur don't miss the 'HAVAS MAHAL'.....as christened by jeetu and company....will upload pics soon.
